Summer Fun! DEVO announces Colorado State Champs!

  |   Uncategorized

IMG_0263 (2)A famous saying by Jon Bailey, a Devo coach for the past ten years, has made its way into the 2016 Devo summer plans:  “Taking it to the next level.”

Devo kicked off it’s 10th summer session by traveling with the U14 and U19 teams to the Colorado State Championship in Eagle, Colorado and returned home with 4 crowned champions.  “It was so crazy for me, being a founder of Devo and a coach, to watch the Devo grad Howard Grotts jump on the podium for his State Championship win as a pro right after 4 of our current Devo riders jumped up to the top spot to the podium.  The announcer said it perfectly; “Everyone should be paying attention to Durango Devo as they must be doing something right.”

Katja Freeburn (pictured) and Keiran Eagen both won their Cat 1 17/18 division on a grueling 22 mile course with Lucas Robbins finishing Cat 1 17/18 in 6th.  Finishing with dust and sweat, Freeburn and Eagan expressed that it was the hardest race they had ever competed in.  Fellow teammate Sadie Schafer and Maddie Jo both crossed the finish line together for Cat 1 15/16.  “They decide to ride together and finish together as the course was so tough and long.  They finished an hour and half ahead of their competitor,” said Tescher.  Andy Munroe and Cobe Freeburn competed in the Cat 2 15/16 race the day before and finished with a 2nd for Cobe and 5th for Munroe.  Riley Amos, in his last year as a U14 junior won his category with his brother Braden Amos taking home a 2nd place finish.  Simon Donnaway competed in the cross country and Super D and finished in 5th at XC and 2nd at Super D.  Madeline Burns, in her first State Championship placed 2nd.  “The races were all hot and dusty, but I saw tons of smiles!  Eagle really knows how to throw a fun event and their trail system is really top notch,” said Tescher.

Devo Explorers will also be “taking it to the next level” this summer by leaving on a five-day bike packing trip from Durango to Telluride all on trails.  They will roll into Telluride Town Park on Saturday July 9th for the Ride Festival and Pearl Jam concert.  “Jon and I really wanted to create a trip that was about being self-sufficient on the bike but really focusing on getting somewhere.  Rolling up to a Pearl Jam concert was the ultimate ‘getting somewhere’,” said Tescher.  The Ride Festival promoters have donated 10 tickets to the group based upon some volunteer work and their overall mission of lessening fossil fuels.  The Explorers are always breaking new ground being the first of its kind in the country and then stepping it up a level adding in Alpaca Raft Trips with Steve Fassbinder, a Specialized Ambassador and bike packing with Alpaca raft extraordinaire.

New this year are Devo’s graduates coming back to coach and mentor the younger riders.  Stephan Davoust, Levi Kurlander and Emily Schaldech have all returned from college after a busy FLC and CU collegiate riding season to coach the U19 teams.  Emily and Stephan are Collegiate National Champions who give part of the credit of their success to Devo.  “Seeing the Devo riders coming back to coach just proves that they believe in our mission and philosophy to such a degree that they want to share that passion,” said Tescher.

With its mission of creating life long cyclists in a team camaraderie environment and coaches leading practices about fun and skill development, Devo sees its successes in many forms.  While creating National Champions is a part of its many successes, Devo grad Howard Grotts is possibly heading to the Olympics this summer and Devo U19 grads Will Berger and Keenan Desplanques are creating a different success story this August.  The pair of 18 year old riders who have ridden with Devo since age 12, have decided to go a route other than racing and will travel to Europe for a bike trip to film an Adventure Documentary.  Filming will begin this August with a 3,000 mile bike tour from Trondheim, Norway to Santiago de Compostela, Spain over the course of 3 months.  “Creating life long cyclists takes many forms and dedicates itself to balancing all levels and paths to it’s riders,” according to Jamie Wienk, Director of Devo.

This summer we will see a whole new chapter for Devo.  Under the new leadership of Jamie Wienk, Devo will be celebrating its “Decade of Wonder” and will head into its next phase coined by Bailey:  ‘Taking it to the next level.’  Tescher said this about their decade anniversary, “Devo is stronger than ever right now and you can see it in the smiles on the kids faces be that on a podium, traveling on a bike through the mountains, swinging a polo mallet or participating in our Junior Devo program that serves over 350 kids from the ages of 2-11. It is our coaches that make Devo so special. We wouldn’t be a strong organization without all of our dedicated coaches, mentors, and community support.  Our agenda is to make kids happy on their bikes and to be good teammates.  It’s this style of coaching that creates good sportsmanship that leads towards good community and team culture.   It’s really pretty simple and definitely proven.”
