This week, over 40 Durango local cyclocrossers will be heading west to take on the nations top riders at the 2009 US National Championships of Cyclocross event in Bend, Oregon. Age group racing begins on thursday and runs through saturday. The collegiate racers compete on sunday as do the men’s and women’s elite. Singlespeed shreders race friday morning and the Under 23 categories are on saturday. The weather is looking super chilly and has the chance of rain and snow. Sounds like cross.

This past weekend saw the end of the FLC Cross Series with the Muscle Cross, at Buckley Colusseum on saturday and the FLC Cross Finals up on the FLC campus. Saturday it was Teal Stetson-Lee taking the win over Carmen McNelis and Ben Sonntag for the men.

2008 U23 national Champion and Devo Alum, Tad Elliott has signed with Team Sho-Air for the 2010 race season. He is moving to the new team from the U23 National Team which ended its team racing program for the upcoming season. Team Sho-Air is one of the top teams on the pro circuit after only 2 seasons. Tad will continue to ride Specialized brand bikes.

It does seem silly nowadays that cycling is not a school supported sport. Well thats about to change in 2010. Running off the successes of the NorCal High School Racing League, and recent addition SoCal League, Colorado has bitten from the apple and will launch a scholastic season for 2010.

The season appears to be in september with a state championship race in October. Check out their site for more information.

This Saturday, Dec. 5, with much preliminary hoopla, is the 4th annual Russell the MuscleCross at Buckley Park. Racing action begins at 10am with the Singlespeeders followed by the kids race at 11am. The competitive Men’s A and 40+ goes off at 11:30 with the Men’s B and Open Women classes rolling at 12:30pm. Russ the Musc is the 5th race in the FLC Cyclocross Series presented by Animas Orthopedics, Coca-Cola and Rivergate Sports Medicine, and has many unique course features for the racers to navigate – everyone is welcome. The series concludes Sunday up at the FLC Stadium with the Series Finals – racing begins at 10am. For more info check out www.durangocyclery.com. I hear entry is $5!
The singlespeed category is open to mountain bikes as well as cross rigs. The kids race is for child cyclists of all ages. Course helpers will help at all the tricky kid sections, so please come out to Buckley Colusseum (Park) this saturday and enjoy the second to last Durango cycling race of the year.
